Doug Harris Doug’s collection represents a life-time love affair with model trains, Meccano and other toys. He began collecting in his teens and continued through into his eighties. His purchases centered on Hornby, Hornby Dublo and Meccano. He was an active member of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Hornby Railway Collectors Association and the Auckland Meccano Club, as well as a frequent participant at local swap meets and Model-X. In 2016 he moved to Cambridge. In latter years Doug’s focus moved to purchasing a significant collection of Japanese model trains -Sakai and Seki and American models especially Virginian. It was his great ambition to build a large scale model of part of the Virginian Railway in a purpose built room in his home in Cambridge but sadly ill health intervened and that never happened. A photographer by profession Doug produced superb photographic reproductions of Hornby and Meccano illustrated box lids which he sold at swap meets and his photographs of layouts at collectors’ meetings and Model-X often appeared in NZHRCA magazines.
