in 9ct gold mount and chain, 1872. Unlike modern sovereigns, the Victoria Young Head sovereign was struck in ‘coin alignment’ where the coin is turned on the vertical axis, the back (reverse) side has its top at 6 o’clock. This was altered in later sovereigns to ‘medal alignment’ where the top and bottom of the obverse and reverse coin match at 12 o’clock.
