the gilded 9ct rose gold pick and shovel with small gold nuggets framing the 1897 South African 1/2 Pond gold coin (91.67% fine, 3.99gm). With safety chain and bar. 7.7gm. Note: during the colonial gold rush period, there was a fashion for miners to give such brooches to their 'sweetheart'. Similar brooches are said to be South African relating to the Transvaal area where gold was discovered in 1886.
