oil on canvas, initialled F.B.L. 620 x 740mm. Relined many years ago. Provenance: From an old Auckland family collection. Note: Similar still life works were produced to remind wealthy Dutch consumers to not become too attached to their material possessions and worldly pleasures; eternal salvation came only through devotion to God. It is also noted that such works include secret symbolism – a reminder of how to live within strict moral guidelines, achieve spiritual growth, resist earthly temptation.
