'Arabian Market Scene', tempera on board, signed and dated '24. 735 x 1215. Note: Fletcher was born in Yorkshire, England in 1890, coming to New Zealand and settling in Christchurch in 1909 and is noted exhibiting with the N.Z. Academy of Fine Arts in 1916. This major work exhibits the artist's strength of use of colour and vibrancy of subject, this market street scene is most likely Bethlehem, the Palestinian town south of Jerusalem, the biblical birthplace of Jesus.
