the reverse engraved P/O J.J. KERR. L.20mm. Together with a New Zealand 'Airforce Association 1945-46' pin, this pin being together with the Caterpillar badge when purchased by our vendor, suggesting a New Zealand recipient is likely. Note: The Caterpillar Club is an informal association of people who have successfully used a parachute to bail out of a disabled aircraft, often becoming POW's. These members were awarded with a caterpillar badge. The caterpillar was chosen as an emblem as it represented the silk worm, which can gently lower itself to earth by silky threads. Many parachutes in the early days of aviation were also made from silk.
