portrait of Sister Aubert, oil on board, 285 x 235mm. Note: Suzanne Aubert (1835 - 1926) was also known by her cleric name Sister Mary Joseph. She is noted for starting a home for orphans and the underprivileged in Jerusalem on the Whanganui river in 1885 and for combining Maori medicine and Pakeha science. It is recorded that Sister Aubert spoke Maori well and wrote books in Maori, English and French helping in the cultural understanding. Provenance: Ex. the estate collection of the noted New Zealand author Peter Wells.
