carved from a river worn boulder, of wide fairly flat form, the bowl centre with wide border well carved with kowhaiwhai and notch designs, dark green tone. 560 x 420 x 120mm. Note: Such bowls allow people to cleanse themselves of the tapu | sacred restriction before re-entering the everyday world. A few drops of water splashed over the head enables people to become noa | free from tapu.
