Lot Details

the first kete, Te Kete Tuauri (standing in darkness) contains the knowledge required for everyday living - the mudane. It is represented in natural, un-dyed harakeke. 120 x 160mm. The second, Te Kete Tuaatea (standing in the open) contains the special skills and knowledge of the accomplished craftsman, fisherman, weaver etc. Represented in dressed harakeke, pingao and kiekie. This is illustrated on the cover of the 2020 Ngai Tatou publication. 95 x 165mm. The third, Te Kete Aronui (expressive and complete) contains the knowledge of the tohunga, the great complexity and depth of knowledge in all fields of the expert whether in the expressive arts, philosophy, science, medicine etc. It is represented in muka, the dressed and dyed fibre of harakeke, embellished with the paua shell eyes of the sea God, Tangaroa.110 x 140mm. With Printed material detailing its commission and heritage. 'Tradition has it that Maui ascended to Ragiatea where he secured three baskets of knowledge to return to earth and share with humanity'.
