Lot Details
engraved to one face with a pattern of concentric circles each joined by four simple lines. Heavily patinated with red ochre. L.247mm. Provenance: Stated as 'from an old Brisbane collection' but without details. The Jorgen Lotz Collection. A churinga or tjurunga is an object of significance for Central Australian Aboriginal people and were most commonly circular, oval or oblong in shape and made from polished stone or wood. Preceding the 20thC, only initiated males were able to see or touch them. Each churinga has its own 'name', which was sung or chanted whenever it was inspected or handled.
