Lot Details

geometric large X motif, symbolic of an anthropomorphic ancestor form, with arms raised and legs apart, separated and flanked by bands of red, green and white small triangles. The top edge with woven cane, to which feathers would be added in warfare, symbolising the power of a warrior's headdress. 1520 x 590mm. Provenance: The Jorgen Lotz collection. Purchased from Chris Boylan Oceanic Art, Sydney, 2024. Noted as ' I have had this shield for many years - just in storage. It really is a very elegant traditional Wahgi Valley shield. Only was in one exhibition some years ago. possibly with Michael Reid Gallery... I acquired this shield in 2009 or 2010'. Purchased for AUS$3,800. The Jorgen Lotz Collection.
