Lot Details

the ebonised base carved with two large wheku heads, the side supports carved with side profile manaia and decorated with rauponga and pikorauru spirals. Y 22409. Purchased from Dunbar Sloane Māori and Oceanic Art Sale, October 10th, 2023, as part of a larger collection of works by Tene Waitere. 720 x 50 x 380mm & 100x75x690mm. Note: In 1901, the well-known artist and New Zealand international rugby representative Thomas Darby Ryan took out a long-term lease on land in Fenton Street Rotorua. He commissioned the building of a wharenui on the land which was made in the Ngati Tarawhai style. A second wharenui was then built on the shores of Lake Taupo in a similar style. The carvings from the wharenui in Rotorua have been in storage since the 1960s. This superb and historically important collection of rare whakairo, from the Rotorua wharenui. The original offering included Poupou panels from the house interior and Pare, Amo, Mahi, Raparapa and Paepae from the house exterior.
