Lot Details
fully carved, of traditional elongated oval shape with stylised figures carved to the ends, the head protruding as a handle to one end with serrated paua ring inset eyes, the head to the other end broken away and absent. The box carved with angular lines of rauponga with pakati (notching). The lid and base centred with a double scroll. Some cracks and restoration evident. L.405mm. Provenance: Hellmut Patzer, Silesia, Poland (acquired in the 1st half of the 20th century). Literature: Phelps, Steven, Art and Artefacts of the Pacific, Africa and the Americas.
