Pauline Gordon’s outstanding private collection of china toast racks is the most comprehensive we have seen in the country. Whilst looking to add to a friend’s collection of Carltonware ‘Pink Foxglove’ tableware Pauline saw a toast rack in that pattern. Her friend had just purchased a toast rack but Pauline bought it anyway and the passion to collect was ignited. Following that, buying internationally as well as locally Pauline honed her eye, noting the quality of some English maker’s, the superior design of others, the elegance of this one, the daintiness of that one, and she didn’t hesitate when a simple loaf shaped one advertising the bread brand Hovis came up for sale. Pauline’s family even got involved, her son whilst on his O.E in Scotland would buy special, rarer examples and post them back home. Toast for breakfast is almost an elemental thing, be it twice buttered five-grain, or jam laden sourdough. We at Cordy’s thought there couldn’t be a better fit with the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Pink Ribbon Breakfasts, an opportunity to offer not a slice of toast – but the whole toast rack!!
