Lot Details
located in central Hawkes Bay. The club was affiliated to the national body of croquet, known at the time as The New Zealand Croquet Council. The winners were affiliated members of the club. Tournaments were often named in honour of an older member. In this case it could be a Mrs. McLean from Waipukurau CC (sometimes referred to as Mrs R. McLean, sometimes as Mrs H. McLean, as women at the time were sometimes referred to by their husband’s names). But we have no way to confirm any of this. The tournament would have been a club tournament (as opposed to a regional or national tournament) and the shield would have been the property of the club and proudly hung on the croquet club house walls. Waipukurau CC isn’t affiliated to Croquet NZ these days and hasn’t been for a very long time. The club isn’t really operating anymore.
