Lot Details

the exteriors believed to be a scene from one of China’s most popular plays, the underside bearing a four-character mark, “Ruoshen Zhencang”. Contributors to the Asian Arts Forum translate this variously as “Precious collection of the seemingly old” and “From the collection of Ruoshen Zhencang”. Opinions differ as to dating of these bowls, a search on Google disclosing suggested age of manufacture from as early as the Kangxi reign (1662 to 1722).The British Museum has a bowl bearing a variation of this mark which it claims is 19th century. The inside glaze of these bowls has been scuffed, similar to porcelain sometimes recovered from a shipwreck. Unfortunately, we have no history or provenance on this collection. D.115mm
