Lot Details

51mm case, hallmarked London 1811, by John Dyer. Fusée movement with duplex escapement, signed and numbered to the gilded dust cover, back plate and dial. Bullseye glass, white enamel dial, Roman numerals, minute indices, subs seconds at VI, gold hands. Edge hairline at V - VI. James McCabe originally from Ireland relocated to London in the late 18thC. He was well known for his fine watches and clocks with many of them being exported to India. His four sons carried on the business after his death in 1811. In his last year he was made Warden of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. During the 19thC the family were to become one of the most famous clockmaking families of this period. They were particularly skilled at making exceptional carriage clocks.
