Lot Details

'Rape of the Sabine', a substantial bronze sculpture from the 'Chiurazzi Foundry' and bearing their circular mark. H.1004mm. Note: The famed sculpture of the rape of Rome, the masterpiece of the sixteenth century Flemish artist Giambologna represents one of the oldest events in the history of Rome, surrounded by the legend. The Rape of the Sabines, was a very popular theme in the late Renaissance. In short, Rome, which thanks to Romulus had been enlarged so as to 'be able to compete militarily with any nation beyond', began to realize that women were scarce and its size would last a single generation if the Romans did not find enough wives to bear new sons for the city.
