An uncommon WWI Somes Island Wellington Harbour woods hinged lid box
made by an 'Enemy Alien' interned on Somes Island, the kauri carcass with other exotic N.Z. timbers parquetry inlaid, sectional interior. 415 x 255 x 105mm. A note included detailing 'This has been passed down, my grandfather who died in 1972 aged 88 bought this home from WWI. The story is it was made by prisoners-of-war on Somes Island off Wellington...'. It is possible that this could be the work of the German-born Hans Hansen, see further notes with this lot.

A Royal Worcester porcelain urn vase and cover
ovoid shape, raised on a circular spreading foot and with a short trumpet mouth issuing from a fluted neck, the body decorated on a panel reserved on a cobalt and gilt ground. Hand painted with exotic birds perched and in flight in an Elysian landscape with a distant view of castle ruins; the body further decorated with moulded patterns highlighted with gilding incorporating stylised acanthus and trellis patterns, the back decorated with acanthus scroll and flowers in gilt. Blue mark, date code for 1897, shape 1817. The cone finial refitted to the small domed cover. 370mm.

painted in the round to the spherical body with peaches, blackberries, cherries and leaves on a mossy green ground, signed by the artist, lion headed scrolling handles, elaborate gold enrichments, the lid with leaf scroll and spire finial. Provenance: Ex. the estate of our vendor's parents who had a long history of China business ownership in England and founded the Hereford Fine China N.Z. business bringing Rick Lewis out to N.Z. This spectacular vase sold with its original packing box used for its transportation to N.Z.
