Lot Details

watercolour and ink on paper, signed in brush point lower right, titled and dated in pencil on reverse. 253 x 375mm. Note: Born in Taihape, Douglas MacDiarmid was educated at Canterbury University in music, then art, from 1940 to 1945, where he was associated with fellow artists Evelyn Page, Rita Angus and Leo Bensemann. After serving with the NZ Air force in WW II, he moved to London where he painted and taught English to foreign students. During this time, MacDiarmid put to good use the sense of colour taught to him by Evelyn Page. A founding member of the Thursday Club, MacDiarmid painted at every available opportunity. In 1949, he returned to New Zealand and resided in Wellington before travelling to Europe once again and settling in France, continuing to exhibit with the Group in Christchurch. In his paintings and drawings, such as landscape compositions, he aims to capture the rhythm of form, rather than an exact representation.
