oil on board, signed lower left, 570 x 705mm. Presented in original ornate gilt frame; inscribed on reverse ‘A Canterbury byroad Middleton’ £55/-. Note: In 1908 he was appointed to the Elam School of Arts in Auckland 1908 – 1911, where he was an influential teacher, his pupils including Francis McCracken, John Weeks and Ida Eise. He left for Europe in 1911 and studied at the Westminster School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art and later at the Scottish Academy School of Art.
