ŌMATA STOCKADE AUCTION
Monday, 26 August - Tuesday, 3 September 2024
John and Lynda Matthews have always been passionate about researching the complex, obscure, and still raw histories of the conflicts in Taranaki between 1860 and 1881. Recently, they realised a long-held dream through their business Waireka Properties Limited, of building a replica of a New Zealand Wars colonial military stockade near the site of the original Ōmata Stockade in Taranaki. Waireka Properties Ltd. is also undertaking the development of a New Zealand Tree Park. Originally planning to furnish it with genuine materials that colonial settlers and military would have had on hand, they collected day-to-day objects such as rifle-muskets and militaria, saddlery, builder's tools, table and kitchenwares, footlockers, lamps, furniture and other mid-19th century settler items. Finally, with the stockade nearing architectural completion, they realised that the building itself was the story, requiring no embellishment of props. The replica stockade provided enough historical context. Hence, their decision to sell at auction the amazing collection gathered over 20 years, as presented here. NOTE: Firearms are annotated either NLR: Antique; No firearms license is required or ALR: A New Zealand firearms licence is required to purchase these items.
