A c.1950 Short Sunderland chromed brass plane - on stand. L.225mm. Note: The Short S.25 Sunderland is a British flying boat patrol bomber, developed and constructed by Short Brothers for the Royal Air Force (RAF). The aircraft took its service name from the town (latterly, city) and port of Sunderland in North East England. The Sunderland was one of the most powerful and widely used flying boats throughout the Second World War. In addition to the RAF, the type was operated by other Allied military air wings, including the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) where they remained in service up to 1967. MOTAT (Auckland) has a Sunderland Mark V, known as NZ4115.

An uncommon William IV carved ivory desk top combination sundial compass thermometer - with paper plateau, signed 'C Essex & Co, London' under glass dome, the tapered column with glass thermometer framed by engraved scale. The top and base rims with panel carved, leaf and bead decoration. H.160mm.

A large cased model of a steam train 'Evening Star 92220’ - on realistic track, together with a book and print. 1850 x 240 x 455mm. Provenance: Made by John Borrows, an Auckland engineer who was the brains behind Fisher & Paykel's revolutionary SmartDrive washing machine. In Mr Borrows’ spare time he was a model maker.

A full six volume set of 'The British Colonies' by R. Montgomery Martin. Included in Vol III - New Zealand (pg. 108-356), and Vol VI - Australia Supplement (175 pg) - large octavo 20 x 28cm, quarter calf-bound, gilt spines, marbled boards (some scuffing), published The London Printing and Publishing Co., nd, c.1853, maps and most illustrations removed. An important 19thC text source of British colonial history, economic data, politics, populations and indigenous history.

A 19thC Borneo Dayak head-hunter’s sword (Mandau) - Kalimantan region. With plaited fibre lashing to the figure carved wooden scabbard, the carved bone hilt with grotesque animals and scrolling forms and hair tufts highlights. The shaped blade narrowing to the handle. An historic Boer War presentation silver mounted horses hoof inkwell - the applied silver shield presentation engraved with multiple names including Lt. Col. F.C. Bethune Major, Major R.L.Walter and 31 other names. The silver top with missing attachment and small lidded inkwell above an applied silver mount modelled and engraved as horses hair. Silver horse shoe to the base.

Anton Teutenberg UFBA medal to Benjamin Hounslow - with his name on the medal suspender and bar, contained in box of issue. The medal named to Benjamin Hounslow from the Masterton Fire Brigade 1880. Benjamin was a cabinetmaker who died at Masterton 1893 aged 32/3. The medal is an excellent early example of Teutenberg's work and has been hand engraved by him.

A WW1 Victory Medal impressed 7/74 TPR H B JOYCE NZEF. - Henry Bernard Joyce was killed at Gallipoli on 22 August 1915 aged 23 (but may have been as old as 26). He was from Taranaki and also ‘Strathdene’, Mt Eden Road but was serving with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles when killed. He was last seen 21 August 1915 and sustained wounds to the abdomen and arm during the 1st assault on Hill 60.

The medal group awarded to Lt. E.D. Cox R.F.A. including the Military Cross - the Military Cross with original box, together with WWI Pair, named to Lt. E.D. Cox, The Defence Medal and the 1953 Coronation medal. The group also with Special Constabulary Long Service Medal awarded to Lt. E.D. Cox's brother Keith T. Cox and named to him. Note: A photo copy of an original photo of Lt. E.D. Cox and newspaper clipping detailing his actions in receiving the Military Cross is attached as a photo with this lot. Family have retained the originals. The clipping mentions: 'He commanded two machine guns, supporting a battalion attack, when strong resistance was encountered and the infantry compelled to withdraw. He covered the operation successfully remaining for seven hours in a most exposed position...'

WW1 1914-15 trio of medals with recent copy photo - all named 7/496 TPR S HALL NZEF. The naming in the Star is more recent. Stanley was born in 1887 at Wellington, Son of Archibald and Catherine (Kate) Hall. He was educated for a time at Nelson College (1903) before taking up an apprenticeship at the Wellington - Manawatu Railway Company. When that company was sold, he farmed at Ohau (near Levin) before working as an agent for his father's coaching business between Christchurch and the West Coast. He attested for service with the NZEF in August 1914, and embarked with 1st (CYC) Squadron, Canterbury Mounted Rifles, Main Body. Hall served in Egypt, not deploying to Gallipoli until August 1915. During the Battle of Hill 60, probably on 28th August, Hall suffered a gunshot wound through the spine, causing immediate paralysis. He was initially reported missing, but was later recovered and evacuated to Malta, where he died of his wounds on 11th September 1915. He was buried in Pieta Military Cemetery.

WW1 1914-15 trio of medals in a modern frame - with copy photo and 2 wound stripes. The medals all correctly impressed 10/409 SJT L A KINZETT NZEF. Louis Kinzett was living in Wanganui working as a wood turner when he enlisted in the Wellington Infantry in October 1914. He served at Gallipoli where he was wounded on 5 May 1915. He is known to have been involved in a brutal bayonet charge earlier. After recovery in Egypt he was returned to Gallipoli 3 months later, narrowly missing his Battalions near obliteration at Chunuk Bair on 8 August. His second wounding was in France on 15 September 1916.

WW1 1914-15 trio of medals in modern frame - with copied photo, to 12/134 2/LT E HORROBIN NZEF. Edwin Horrobin enlisted in the Auckland Infantry in October 1914. He was a bank officer working in Auckland for the Bank of Australasia. He embarked as a Private and served with the Auckland Infantry at Gallipoli. He was later posted to HQ in London where he had clerical roles. He worked for the Bank of Australasia for 41 years, his last 12 years as manager in Napier (likely during the earthquake) before he retired in 1943. He died in 1963.

The Boer War and WW1 medals to war to Frederick William Lucas killed on Gallipoli - in a modern frame with a copy photo. QSA 9033 PTE F W LUCAS 10TH NZ CONT. 1914-15 Star and 1914-18 War Medal 13/708 TPR F W LUCAS NZEF. The Victory Medal an erased or un-named filler. Frederick was the manager of the NZ Dairy Assoc creamery at Whangarata and later the creamery at Kaukapakapa. He was killed in action on 8 August 1915 during the attack on Chunuk Bair – aged 32.

The historic WW1 Memorial Plaque named to JAMES HENDERSON - in modern frame with copy photo. Presumed to be 13/277 Lieutenant James Henderson from Kihikihi was a single farmer who served with the Waikato Mounted Rifles at Gallipoli and was killed at Chunuk Bair on 8 August 1915.

The Boer War and WW1 Medals to Charles Kelland - of the Canterbury Infantry. Killed with the Trench Mortars, on the Somme 28 April 1918. Charles Kelland served in the Boer War with the 7th NZ Contingent. His QSA is named 4418 PTE C C KELLAND 7TH NZ CONT. His WW1 pair is named 27307 PTE C C KELLAND NZEF. Mounted in modern frame with small NZ Boer War veterans fern leaf badge and copy photo.

1914-18 War medal to 16120 (T) CPL G J PORTEOUS NZEF - he served in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles in Sinai and Palestine and then the conclusion of the war formed part of the occupation force which served in Turkey and returned to Gallipoli in November 1918 to bury the dead. Quite rare as such. Sold with his elaborately engraved gold fob from the town he was from. This is 9ct and weighs 6.9gms.

The WW1 memorial scroll and original photo in a modern frame to Trooper James Hughes - of the Wellington Mounted Rifles. 11/889 James Hughes was a famer from Wanganui. He served at Gallipoli and was severely wounded on 27 August 1915, just 11 days after landing. He was evacuated to England where he died of his wounds on 17 October.

1914-15 medal trio in new frame with copy photo of 10/1345 PTE A F N STEVENS NZEF - the son of a prostitute, he was taken from his mother and put in an industrial school. Arthur was killed at Chunuk Bair whilst serving with the Wellington Infantry aged 36. He was reported missing in the battle and later presumed dead. His body was never recovered.

A vintage painted heavy cast bronze New Zealand Coat of Arms - the design reflects New Zealand's history as a bicultural nation, with Zealandia, a European female figure on one side and a Māori Rangatira (chief) on the other. The symbols on the central shield represent New Zealand's trade, agriculture and industry, and a Crown represents New Zealand's status as a constitutional monarchy. 610 x 590mm.

The Onehunga Regatta 1887 silver plate trophy cup - by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co (Wallingford, Connecticut, USA). Dia.97mm. H.210mm. Impressed number 022 to the base. One side with an engraved horse ridden by a jockey, the other inscribed Onehunga Regatta/Rob Roy Canoe/Race/1887/1st Prize. Good fine and an interesting variety of the maker`s mark. The Onehunga Regatta was held on Saturday 12 February 1887 on the waters of the Manukau in good weather with smooth waters for the rowing races. The Rob Roy Canoe Race was for a first prize of a cup valued at over 4 pounds and second prize was a cup valued at 2 pounds. There were three entries but the race resulted in a competition between the Jones brothers, as Barnes, the other competitor, broke his paddle at the start. The result was A.Jones, 1; D.Jones, 2; Barnes, 0. The winners trophy was donated by Mr. F.H.Lewisson, jeweller, of Auckland, who died unexpectedly less than a year later on 14 December 1887 at age 57. Based on the engraved figure on one side, the trophy appears to be for horse racing but has been used for the Rob Roy canoe race. The Rob Roy canoe was a specific design of canoe named in honour of John Rob Roy MacGregor, a Scottish lawyer and explorer nicknamed Rob Roy after his famous relative. McGregor designed the Rob Roy` canoe and started the sports of canoeing and kayaking in the 1860s

A Chinese pale jade Kuanyin statuette, pale celadon with subtle lavender tints - modelled seated upon a single lotus throne, the bodhisattva sits with left hand in vitarka mudra and right hand holding a vase with willow branch, the deities headdress covering a lotus diadem and backed by a leaf shaped mandala. On black lacquered plinth (chipped). Overall H.355mm.

A Chinese hu-form vase with plum-purple glaze, impressed with Yongzheng four-character reign mark and bearing collector's labels - the baluster form with raised double ring at the shoulder and mouth where the glaze thins to show the light underglaze. Under the foot the seal mark on a mottled ground framed by a drizzle of celadon glaze. Affied paper labels to the vase, referencing the collector and dealer Ching Tsai Loo (1880-1957): i) 'Flambe Hu Yung-Cheng, C.T.Loo, 57.8' and ii) 'C.T. Loo & Co., Paris 452' and to the gilt metal stand referencing Florine Ebstein-Langweil (1861-1958) iii) 'Mde F. Langweil, Objets d'Art Anciens de la Chine et du Japon. 4 Boul. des Italiens 4, Paris'. A highly decorative and energetic bronze of a bodhisattva Shaolin monk - wielding his khakkhara staff in his raised arm and manifesting a flaming pearl in his left hand, stamped under the hem of his flaring cloak with two undeciphered zhuanshu script seal marks. The surface treatments including cold painting and enhanced verdigris patination. The poised stance above rising and falling waves mirroring the Buddhist concept of finding balance and equanimity amidst change, the ebb and flow - life and death. H.1010mm,

A superb pair of 19thC Daisho tsuba - the Dai in iron with raised rim showing a Shibuichi stag in relief by a river under a silver crescent moon, gold highlights on foliage to the front and reverse. The Sho in Shiboichi with raised deer in copper with gold antlers under a silver full moon behind clouds. Gold and Shakudo maple leaves on front and reverse. In fitted box.
